As usual, a very thought provoking article. As to the numbers, yes, the numerical equivalent of the lettters that spell "chai" or life is 18. That is why it is common, when giving a money gift (i.e., bar mitzvah, or brit/naming), to use multiples of 18. In my parents' day, an $18 gift for a Bar Mitzvah was a big deal (I remember for my Bar Mitzvah getting a check for $10 and feeling like Diamond Jim Brady), so now it's multiples.
