Talking Judaism, culture and Torah! Sounds perfect to me. The late hours though would kill me…well, maybe not!

Great post!

Shavuot is my favorite Jewish holiday. I love the idea that we make learning fun. What kid doesn't want to stay up all night? Combine it with learning, and you have immediate positive associations.

This year we went to a Tikkun Leil in our community. It was really lovely and a great way to meet other people here in Zurich. One of my favorite talks focused on education in Judaism.

I liked this that we discussed: teach a child in his own way, and when he is old, he will not depart from it. (Proverbs 22.6)

I went to a school for people with learning disabilities and I remember really appreciating that we were all given opportunities to learn at our own pace and in the way that worked best for us--we always had options of visual or tactile or oral learning etc.

We also spoke about something from Bava Batra 21a that dicussed local schooling--having school teachers established in each town, and not bringing a child from one town to another.

I was interested to learn more about this with the modern system of charter schools etc.

The section also discusses that the maximum number of students for one teacher of children is twenty five children. Even that long ago, we were discussing small classroom sizes!

But I think my favorite part of the section was whrn it said that if the teacher needs an assistant, the residents of the town should pay the salary of the assistant--mostly I interpreted this as a community should be engaged and invested in the education of its children.

Very full..more goodies here than usual ! nice. one point: antisemitism is of course very bad. But what took place in Nazi Germany went beyond antisemitism and was mass murder, the end stage of antisemitism
