God removes his presence from the world so that man can take on more responsibility- become greater in their stewardship role of the world; so that man can be extraordinary - higher than angels. The dark aspect of that is now man has the ability to do terrible things. The holocaust happened not because the Jewish people deserved to be exterminated. Rather, in the vacuum that was created by Gods removal, man did not cultivate integrity. Instead, they thought they were Gods. In doing so, 6 million Jews were murdered - and 200 million others - by tyranny.
Also, this Drop reminded me of this short talk (only about 18 minutes) by Dara Horn called "The Eicha Problem," (Eicha is the Hebrew name of the book of Lamentations) from about 14 years ago. Unfortunately, even more relevant today than when it was given.

Love this Drop - very well thought out using interesting historical context, an assessment of what’s going on in the current landscape of feuding factions, and personal insight in regards to how we can treat each other even if we have differing views and practice our Judaism differently. Unfortunately people are not always open to understanding and accepting variations on a theme.
